River in SE Australia, a tributary of the
river Murray, which it joins at Wentworth. It
is 3,075 km/1,910 mi long, and its waters are
conserved in Menindee Lake (155 sq km/60 sq
mi) and others nearby. The name comes from
Sir Ralph Darling (1775-1858), governor of
New South Wales 1825-31. The Darling Range, a
ridge in W Australia, has a highest point of
about 582 m/1,669 ft.
